Motorcycle Chain Lube Guide: Motul C1–C5 Explained

A motorcycle chain is a few hundred dollars of precision parts that most riders neglect until it's kinked, rusty, and eating sprockets. Motul's C-series makes the routine simple — once you know what each can does.

The system, decoded

Product What it is When to use it
C1 Chain Clean Solvent degreaser Before every lube — always clean first
C2 Chain Lube Road Sticky white lube Street bikes — resists fling at highway speed
C3 Chain Lube Off Road Green tacky lube Dirt bikes — sheds sand and mud instead of grinding it
C4 Factory Line Racing lube Track — minimum drag, maximum film strength
C5 Chain Paste Brush-on paste Precision application, zero overspray, travel-friendly

The 15-minute routine

  1. Warm the chain — a short ride helps old lube release.
  2. Clean — spray C1 on the lower run while rotating the rear wheel; scrub with a chain brush; let it flash off.
  3. Lube — light, even coat of C2 (road) or C3 (dirt) on the inside of the chain — centrifugal force works it outward.
  4. Wait — give it 10 minutes to set before riding, or it flings.

Every 500 miles on the street, every ride in the dirt. O-ring safe across the whole C-series.

Or just get the kit

The Chain Care Kit Road and Off-Road kit bundle the cleaner, the right lube, and a chain brush — the whole routine in one box.

What about bicycle chains?

Motul also makes dedicated bicycle chain products — Bike Care Chain Lube Wet for foul weather, Dry for clean conditions, and a bicycle chain cleaner. Don't put motorcycle lube on a bicycle drivetrain — it's too heavy and attracts grit.
