American V-twins are different from metric bikes in one big way: most Harleys hold oil in three separate places: engine, transmission, and primary chaincase. Each has its own requirements. Motul's TWIN line covers all three. Here's what goes where.
The three holes, decoded
| Compartment | Product | Why it's different |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | TWIN 20W-50 | Air-cooled V-twins run hot and need a heavy, shear-stable synthetic |
| Transmission | TWIN Gear Oil 75W-90 | Big-twin gearboxes want a dedicated hypoid-capable gear oil |
| Primary | TWIN Primary & Chaincase Oil | The wet clutch lives here, and the oil must let it grip |
Sportsters are the exception: the transmission and primary share one compartment, which is what TWIN Gear & Chaincase Oil is for.
The one-box shortcut
If you'd rather not buy three bottles separately, Motul packages complete oil change kits matched to your engine generation: the TWIN Oil Change Kit for Evolution & Twin Cam and the TWIN Oil Change Kit for Milwaukee-Eight. Each contains the right oils for all three compartments.
Can I just run one oil in all three holes?
Some riders do run a 20W-50 everywhere, and some manuals allow it. But the compartments have opposing demands. The primary needs controlled friction for the clutch, the transmission wants extreme-pressure gear protection, and the engine needs high-temperature film strength. Dedicated fluids are cheap insurance on an engine that costs five figures to rebuild.
