Motul makes three tiers of 4-stroke motorcycle oil, and the honest answer is that most riders are either underbuying or overbuying. Here's how the lineup actually breaks down — and how to pick without wasting money.
The three tiers at a glance
| Line | Base | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Motul 5100 | Technosynthese® semi-synthetic | Commuters, high-mileage bikes, budget-conscious regular changes |
| Motul 7100 | 100% synthetic with ester technology | Most modern street bikes — the sweet spot for performance per dollar |
| Motul 300V Factory Line | 100% synthetic ESTER Core® racing formula | Track days, racing, and riders who want the ceiling |
Motul 5100: the honest workhorse
5100 is a semi-synthetic built on Motul's Technosynthese® blend. It carries JASO MA2 wet-clutch certification, which means your clutch won't slip and your gearbox is protected. If you change oil on schedule and ride a commuter or an older bike, 5100 does the job without drama. Where it gives ground to 7100 is in sustained high-RPM heat and extended drain intervals.
Motul 7100: the default answer
For most riders on modern bikes, 7100 is the answer. It's a full synthetic with ester technology — esters cling to metal surfaces electrostatically, so there's an oil film on your cam lobes at cold start, before the pump has even primed. It holds viscosity under sustained heat better than any semi-synthetic can, carries JASO MA2 for wet clutches, and comes in viscosities for nearly every bike sold in the US. If you're unsure, buy 7100 in the viscosity your owner's manual specifies.
Motul 300V: when the ceiling matters
300V Factory Line is Motul's racing oil — the ESTER Core® formulation developed with factory race teams. It prioritizes maximum power output and film strength at racing temperatures. Two things to know: it comes in Road Racing and Off Road versions, and it's engineered for performance-first duty — if you do track days, race, or ride hard enough to get your oil genuinely hot, 300V is the ceiling. If you commute, it's more oil than you need.
The wet-clutch rule (don't skip this)
Whatever you pick, motorcycle oil with a wet clutch must carry a JASO MA/MA2 rating. Car oils — including Motul's own excellent 8100 line — contain friction modifiers that make wet clutches slip. This is the single most common oil mistake we see. All three lines above are wet-clutch safe.
